In 2013 and 2014 I started to edit my Facebook friend’s photos, replacing their faces with actor and all-round general meme, Nicolas Cage. Unfortunately the project fell short by a few hundred, but not before I completed 151. I may return to the project one day, but I don’t have facebook.
What started as a playful experiment and technical exercise has evolved into a retrospective investigation into what friendship is in the 21st century; a metanalysis of relationships in the evolution of para-social media. Currently, in 2023, ten years after it began, this project features friends, mates and acquaintances of differing levels at the time of creation. however, in the ten years since, some are still friends, some are not, some have died, and some I do not even remember. For me, it serves as a reminder that people are as shifting as the tides and nothing is forever, especially the now in which these images were made, and especially in the time of ADHD friendships that are swiped left or right in an instant.
